Five Square House
On the tip of the North Fork of Long Island, the salty air and soft sunlight inspired the design of this multi-generational beach house. Perched on a topographic highpoint, fresh breezes allow for natural ventilation to cool the house. The operable wood-framed windows and sliding doors are designed to create cross-ventilation in each room and the stack effect through the open staircases, bringing cool sea air through the house in summer. The building is sited so that winter sun penetrates through the house during the cold months, and the building self-shades during the height of summer. Carved into the hillside, the lower floor opens to the front lawn and path to the beach. The main living floor opens to the backyard and dining terrace where the family enjoys large, festive dinners under the trees. The house is clad in shou sugi ban wood, which will naturally silver over time, stitching the house into the surrounding landscape of birch trees and wheat fields.
